IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: Mastering Bar Charts for a Band 9
The chart illustrates the amount of money spent on cars, computers, books, perfume, and cameras in Indonesia and Malaysia in 2024. The units are measured in trillion Indonesian Rupiah (Rp).
Overall, Malaysia spent more money on consumer goods than Indonesia during the given period. Both Malaysians and Indonesians spent most of their money on cars, while the least amount was spent on perfume in Malaysia and on cameras in Indonesia. Furthermore, the most significant difference in expenditure between the two countries was on cameras.
In terms of cars, people in Malaysia spent slightly more than Rp45 trillion, compared to Rp40 trillion in Indonesia. Likewise, Malaysian expenditure on books was higher than in Indonesia, at around Rp40 trillion and Rp30 trillion, respectively. In Malaysia, spending on cameras was over double that of Indonesia, where it accounted for only Rp15 trillion.
On the other hand, Indonesia spent more on the remaining goods. Indonesians spent above Rp35 trillion on computers, whereas Malaysians spent exactly Rp35 trillion. Neither country spent much on perfume, which accounted for Rp20 trillion in Indonesia but less than Rp15 trillion in Malaysia.
